Funding

Medicare

Audiology and hearing services are not routinely subsidised in Australia by Medicare. However, if you have a referral from your GP or ENT specialist, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate on your hearing assessment. Furthermore, if you have established a Team Care Arrangement with your GP, you may also be eligible for a Medicare rebate with earwax removal. Please ensure your Team Care Arrangement includes ‘Audiology’ as one of the services you are receiving, and a referral to Hobart Hearing Care is completed by your GP prior to your appointment. Please note that it is the responsibility of the client to ensure this referral is in place, and full-fee payment is required on the day of the appointment. The Medicare rebate will then be processed.

Private Health Insurance

If you have private health insurance, you may be able to claim a hearing assessment, hearing devices and/or wax removal through your extras cover. You will need to check with your private health provider in order to determine whether you are eligible for coverage, and for the amount that will be covered. Hobart Hearing Care does have HICAPS available, but please note that not all private health providers will process audiology claims through HICAPS at this point in time. For example, hearing devices purchased with Medibank Private cover can be claimed through HICAPS at the time of the fitting; however this is not the case with BUPA and St Luke’s, for example. In these cases, we will require full payment for services and hearing devices on the day, and we will provide a tax invoice and receipt which can be provided to your health fund for claiming purposes. Please note that it is fraudulent to claim the same item using both Medicare and private health insurance.

*Hearing Services Program

The Hearing Services Program (HSP) is administered by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. The goal of the program is to ensure eligible Australians with hearing loss have access to subsidised hearing services and devices, and to thus improve engagement with the community. Australians who possess a DVA card, or pension card, may be eligible for the program. Those who are eligible for the HSP will have access to free hearing services with Hobart Hearing Care (with the exception of wax-removal services), and subsidised hearing devices every 5 years.
