Hearing Screen

Free Initial Hearing Screens in Hobart
At Hobart Hearing Care, we specialise in offering accurate, professional, and reliable hearing tests for adults. Whether you’re seeking a quick check-up, a comprehensive assessment, or hearing services advice, our expert audiologists are here to support you every step of the way.

What is a Hearing Screen?

This is a short, 15-minute appointment, where we perform a brief hearing test on both ears to assess the four pitches most important for understanding speech. The audiologist will then discuss with you whether you have any hearing loss based on your hearing test results and whether they think you may benefit from a comprehensive Hearing Assessment.

Please note, if you require a hearing check for work, or it has been recommended that you have a hearing test by your GP or medical specialist/ENT, you will need to book a Hearing Assessment.

Signs You May Need a Hearing Test

Hearing loss can sometimes be difficult to detect, as it develops gradually over time. Here are some common signs that people with hearing loss experience:

  • Feeling as though conversations are unclear or people sound as though they are ‘mumbling’

  • Difficulty understanding conversations in background noise

  • Frequently asking people to repeat themselves.

  • Turning up the volume on your speakers or TV

  • Trouble hearing high-pitched sounds like birds or alarms

  • Feeling isolated at social events and meals out

Types of Hearing Tests We Offer

1. Hearing Screen

Duration: 15 minutes

  • Ideal for identifying early signs of hearing loss, these screenings focus on the four most critical pitches for understanding speech. If further evaluation is needed, we recommend booking a Comprehensive Hearing Assessment.

2. Comprehensive Hearing Assessment

Duration: 75 minutes

  • A detailed evaluation of your hearing, including testing speech understanding in both quiet and background noise. Recommended for those referred by a doctor or experiencing significant trouble hearing.

3. Occupational Hearing Assessment

Duration: 50 minutes

  • Designed for workplace requirements, these assessments meet industry standards for occupational health. If a hearing test is required by your employer, please book this appointment type and bring along any required paperwork (if applicable).

4. Diagnostic Hearing Assessments

Duration: 50 minutes

  • If you have a medical referral from your GP or specialist for a hearing test (including Tassie Dizziness Clinic), you will need a diagnostic hearing assessment. This assessment includes the same activities as a Comprehensive Hearing Assessment, but without a discussion about hearing aids. Your audiologist will write a report for your referring doctor.
